Behind the Screen

Some minor BDN improvements are coming

The server box hosting CodeCentral is having an intermittent (hardware) drive problem, so that’s why the server’s been imitating a roller-coaster recently.

We’ll be ordering a new server this month, and I’ll install CodeCentral on that server, so we can then work on fixing the old server and using it for some other beta project coming soon. I think we’ll also finally be at the “saturation” point of being able to implement redundant servers for CodeCentral, QualityCentral, and Threads. Once that happens, hopefully you will never see maintenance messages or server down time for those applications ever again.

I’m not a hardcore networking guy (network admin was never one of my previous IT jobs) so I still have a bit to learn about the inner workings of load balancing a server and how to take a server out of the loop while doing maintenance on it. Fortunately, we have some very expert networking guys in our IS department who can educate me quickly and clearly when I make mistakes!

  1. Not a networking guy? Not a problem. ;o)

There are a few ways of load balancing a server.

    1. Consider looking into using Marathon Technologies solution.

    2. Round robin DNS, with multiple servers hosting the same content.

    3. Use a Cisco solution.

  2. Thanks for the suggestions. We already have load balancing solutions in house. I’m just not USING them yet.

  3. Hi John,

I’m sure the new hardware will prove
great. But please DO HURRY UP, I
have a new project to upload that
    will hopefully make many Delphi
    developers happy :-).
